One Month In Egypt, With Kids – Cost Breakdown

Egypt has some very amazing sites to take in. They are spread out over the entirety country. This was our second time being here, so while we did re-visit a lot of the same things as previous, we also tried to take in a variety of new things. Check out our previous blog from our adventure four years ago here. All prices are in Egyptian pounds with Canadian conversion, and with the current exchange at the time of publishing this (Oct 2023).

Accommodation: 31,882 EGP ($1423.78 CAD)

We stayed in hotels that we all booked through the Agoda app and the majority of them being booked just a few days in advance. These hotels were relatively budget friendly with most included breakfast, but few had pools. The final two hotels towards the end of our trip we did “splurge” a bit and booked in for a more resort type feel. These hotels ranged from 900-2000 EGP ($40-$90 CAD) per night.

Cruise x 3 nights: 11,338 EGP (506.32 CAD)

We jumped on a four day, three night Nile River cruise from Aswan in the south to Luxor in the north. Click here for full details on this.

Bahariya Oasis x 1 night: 9,578 EGP (427.77 CAD)

This was a two day, one night oasis safari through the black and white desert while sleeping among the dunes with various stops at some hot springs. Click here for full details on this.

Food and other spending: Cash: 20,928 EGP ($941.44 CAD) – This included all our food, clothing, souvenirs, SIM card, and laundry service.

Transportation: 7845 EGP ($352.91 CAD)

  • Buses – 2390 EGP ($106.77 CAD)
  • Flight Cairo to Aswan 4255 EGP ($190.11 CAD)
  • Taxis, horse carriages, ferries – 1200 EGP ($53.98 CAD)

Attractions: 9379 EGP ($421.91 CAD)

This included all our admission fees to temples, museums, boat excursion, a submarine ride in Hurghada, along with a day of diving for us adults (two dives each) while the girls relaxed above deck. Our girls were no charge for any of the attractions because of their age.

Grand total: 95,807 EGP ($4074.13 CAD)

We do live a rather simple and basic lifestyle with minimal material luxuries. Our girls don’t eat all that much so we could usually get away with ordering two dishes for meals with a couple extra snacks throughout the day. Nothing was planned in advance either, which in turn actually made things like the cruise and Bahariya Oasis cheaper. Our girls were also free for most things we did from the cruise, oasis, all attractions, etc… which is also a big money saver.

Extra added costs not included in total:

  • Flights from Kathmandu to Cairo: $2087.92 CAD (for the four of us)
  • Entry visa: $25 US per person
  • Travel insurance for the duration of our six months away: $1800 CAD
