Wapta Icefields – June 2017

Intro to mountaineering course through Yamnuska Mountain Adventures.  This was a 6-day course where we worked on our glacier travel and falls arrest skills while seeing fabulous scenery and meeting great people.  This was an amazing experience through Banff National Park and the Bow valley.  We had the opportunity to summit Mt. Olive, Mt. Gordon, and also hiked to the top of the Onion.

The hut was like a home away from home with everything one needed to be comfortable.  You didn’t even need to go outside to get to the outhouses.  The sleeping area was a separate room with bunks from the main kitchen/eating/hang out area.  There were wood stoves in both rooms to keep us warm.  Yamnuska had brought up all the dehydrated food ahead of time to keep our tummy’s full, and boy did they do that.  We felt that we were never hungry and always eating.  The food was so delicious, from bison stew, curry chicken, soups, wraps for when out on the glacier and always dessert to top off the day.  We were traditionally in bed by 9 pm and up at 5 am to get a jump start on our full day of advancing our knowledge.  This course prepared us for what we would need to go out and do glacier travel on our own.  We had very knowledgeable instructors (Merrie-Beth and Larry) and a great group of 8 to spend the days with.
